Cholera Outbreak in Narok County Claims Five Lives, Prompts Emergency Health Measures

Narok, Kenya – Narok County is on high alert following a cholera outbreak that has claimed five lives and left at least 45 people hospitalized, with residents in Trans Mara West and surrounding wards urgently receiving treatment. In response, county authorities have closed eateries, banned the sale of cooked food in open markets, and suspended public gatherings involving feasting, as part of measures to contain the highly contagious disease.

The outbreak, first reported on September 29, 2025, has affected Shankoe, Lolgorian, Alopiikidongoi, and Kilgoris Central wards. Water samples from the affected areas have been sent to government chemists in Kisumu for analysis. Health personnel at Trans Mara West Hospital describe a dire situation, with patients presenting severe dehydration, watery diarrhea, and vomiting. Local survivors recount the debilitating effects of the disease, highlighting its rapid onset and severity. A rapid response team, including officials from the Narok County Government and the national Ministry of Health, has been deployed to manage the crisis.

Medical teams, led by Narok County Director of Health Lucy Kashu, are working round the clock alongside Community Health Promoters to sensitize residents on hygiene practices, safe water consumption, and proper sanitation. Temporary treatment units have been established, and local markets in Kilgoris town have been disinfected to reduce further transmission. Authorities are also ensuring burials in affected areas are conducted within 24 hours to minimize risk, emphasizing strict adherence to public health directives.

Looking forward, Narok County officials are urging residents to report any suspected cases promptly, maintain hand hygiene, and drink treated water to prevent additional infections. The coordinated response between county health authorities, national health officials, and community health workers aims to halt the spread of cholera, safeguard vulnerable populations, and restore public confidence in safety within the county’s towns and trading centers.
