A cholera outbreak in Narok County’s Trans Mara West Sub-County has claimed four lives, including a child, and hospitalized 15 others. County Health Director Lucy Kashu confirmed the outbreak on October 6, 2025, after tests from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) identified the Vibrio cholerae bacterium in samples from patients who first presented at Trans Mara West Sub-County Hospital on September 29. In immediate containment measures, the county has banned all food hawking in trading centres and towns and set up a temporary cholera treatment unit at the local hospital. Community Health Promoters, supported by the Kenya Red Cross, are conducting door-to-door sensitisation on hygiene and distributing water purification tablets. The situation is under close surveillance. We urge everyone to boil water and avoid roadside food until we contain the spread, stated Director Kashu. The county is investigating the source, with initial suspicions pointing to contaminated water sources following recent flash floods.
Cholera kills 4 people and many more hospitalised; food hawking banned.
