Mombasa Launches Ocean Acidification Awareness Swim

by KenyaPolls

Mombasa hosted the Blue pH Swim on October 8, 2025—a 2km ocean swim where participants wore pH-sensitive wristbands changing color with water acidity. Data collected showed alarming acidification near industrial outfalls. Organized by KMFRI and Tri Kenya, the event raised KSh 12 million for coral nurseries. Your swim measures the sea’s health, said marine biologist Dr. Salim Ali. Over 600 athletes joined, including Olympian Hellen Obiri. UNEP cited it as an innovative citizen science model. Annual editions are planned.
