Pressure Mounts on IEBC to Enhance Voter Registration in Kilifi

Kenya Power has commissioned a Sh22 million electricity interconnector linking Machakos and Kitui counties in an effort to improve power stability in the region. The newly completed line is expected to significantly enhance supply reliability, particularly around South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), as well as the Kwavonza and Katangini areas. For years, residents and institutions in these regions have experienced frequent blackouts and unstable voltage, disrupting both academic and economic activities. The interconnector will now serve as an alternative power source, reducing the risk of prolonged outages.

Before the project, SEKU and neighboring households relied mainly on the Masii power line, which stretches from Katoloni in Machakos County. According to Kenya Power officials, the line’s long distance and load strain made it prone to disruptions, especially during adverse weather or technical faults. John Wanyoike, the company’s Kitui County Business Manager, said the new link is designed to redistribute supply pressure and provide backup in case one line experiences a breakdown. By strengthening the grid network between the two counties, the system will offer smoother switching options and quicker restoration times during maintenance or emergencies.

The improvement is expected to benefit not only residential consumers but also learning institutions, small businesses, and agricultural enterprises that rely on consistent electricity. Local leaders have welcomed the development, noting that the project aligns with broader goals of boosting economic growth and improving service delivery in rural and semi-urban areas. The enhanced stability may also support SEKU’s capacity to expand research and digital learning programs, which have previously been affected by power interruptions.

Looking ahead, Kenya Power says it plans to continue upgrading infrastructure across the Lower Eastern region to address growing demand for electricity. The company has emphasized that grid modernization and regional interconnectors are key to ensuring reliable, affordable, and accessible power nationwide. Residents in Machakos and Kitui are now hopeful that the new line marks a turning point for long-awaited energy stability, creating room for improved productivity and uninterrupted daily life.
