County Sets Up Special Taskforce to Monitor Nairobi School Expansion

The Nairobi City County Government announced the formation of a School Infrastructure Monitoring Taskforce in October 2025, as part of its broader strategy to manage rapid school expansion across the city. The taskforce was created in response to rising concerns over stalled construction projects, overcrowded classrooms, and inconsistent reporting on infrastructure progress. With Nairobi’s population growing and enrollment surging, county officials emphasized the need for a coordinated body to track school development and ensure quality delivery.
The taskforce comprises representatives from the County Education Department, Urban Planning Unit, Ministry of Education, and civil society organizations. Its mandate includes conducting site inspections, verifying contractor performance, and ensuring that new classrooms, ECDE centers, and sanitation facilities meet approved standards. The team will also oversee the rollout of the 2025/2026 School Improvement Blueprint, which includes the construction of over 3,500 classrooms and 20 ECDE centers in priority zones such as Embakasi, Dagoretti, and Mathare.
To enhance transparency, the county has introduced a digital infrastructure dashboard where stakeholders can track project milestones, budgets, and completion timelines. Schools will be required to submit monthly progress reports, and community members will be invited to participate in oversight committees. The taskforce will publish quarterly findings and recommend policy adjustments to address delays, budget overruns, or quality concerns.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that it strengthens accountability and ensures that infrastructure investments translate into meaningful learning improvements.
