by KenyaPolls

Mashujaa Day 2025 will be marked in Kitui County, and this year’s proposed honours list from the National Heroes Council shines a spotlight on Kenyan creatives, broadcasters, and athletes whose work has shaped the nation’s cultural identity. The list includes pioneers in literature, music, media, and sports—individuals whose contributions have influenced generations. Among the most notable is the posthumous recognition of Prof. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Kenya’s globally celebrated author whose advocacy for indigenous languages transformed African literature. The entertainment sector also sees tributes to legendary producers Ted Josiah and Clemo, alongside Genge icon Jua Cali. The late E-Sir and early music trailblazer Fundi Konde are also honoured for shaping Kenya’s sonic heritage.

The list extends to gospel, traditional, and contemporary music, highlighting Faith Nziva Kithele for her decades-long impact on gospel and artist rights, as well as John Okumu (Wuod Fibi), whose Ohangla and Rhumba fusion pushed Luo music to international stages. Media personalities Elizabeth Awor Obege and Mwanahamisi Hamadi are commended for breaking barriers in broadcasting and championing women’s empowerment. Their work has guided generations and spotlighted the untold stories of ordinary Kenyan women doing extraordinary things. In the performing arts, Peter Ouma Nyadawa is acknowledged for elevating drama, dance, and music in the North Eastern region.

Sports also takes center stage in this year’s honours. Journalist Shadrack Andenga Odinga is celebrated for coverage that helped young athletes gain national recognition, while longtime football administrator Nicholas Musonye is recognized for his contributions to regional soccer development and Kenya’s preparations for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027. Four Harambee Stars players—Wesley Ogam Rabok, Omar Aboud, Bryne Omondi, and Alpha Onyango—are feted for their standout performances during the 2024 CHAN campaign. In total, 180 Kenyans are proposed for recognition, underscoring the country’s rich and diverse talent across sectors.
