Murang’a prisons benefit from judiciary’s digital justice reforms

by KenyaPolls

Murang’a County is taking a significant step toward modernizing its justice system as the Judiciary rolls out digital reforms in local prisons. Maranjau Prison, located in Maragua Constituency, is now set to host virtual court sessions following the donation of five laptops by the Judiciary. The initiative, aimed at improving case management and reducing delays, comes as part of broader efforts to enhance access to justice and alleviate congestion in correctional facilities.

Presiding over the launch, Murang’a High Court Judge Lady Justice Cecilia Githua emphasized the social impact of the reforms, noting that timely court proceedings are critical for both rehabilitation and justice. We are here to consult with stakeholders because it is part of our responsibility as judges to ascertain the living conditions of the people we send for rehabilitation, Justice Githua explained. The visit included consultations with prison officials and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system to ensure the reforms align with operational realities and enhance efficiency.

The introduction of virtual court sessions is expected to significantly reduce the logistical challenges associated with transporting inmates to court, a common cause of delays and overcrowding. By streamlining hearings, the reforms will allow cases to progress more swiftly, benefiting both the judiciary and incarcerated individuals. Looking ahead, the initiative is likely to serve as a model for other counties seeking to integrate technology into their justice processes, ultimately improving transparency, efficiency, and fairness across Kenya’s prison system.
