ELGEYO MARAKWET — At least two people have died and several others injured after a landslide struck the Kibendo area in Elgeyo Marakwet County on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Rescue operations are ongoing, led by local authorities, Kenya Red Cross, and community volunteers.

The disaster comes amid heavy rains that have triggered multiple landslides in the county, causing widespread destruction and displacing residents. Officials have urged those living in high-risk areas to move to safer locations while emergency teams monitor vulnerable zones.

The mudslides also claimed 26 lives in parts of Marakwet East, including 14 students. Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok confirmed that the government has activated contingency plans to support affected learners, ensuring that national examinations proceed without disruption. Emergency arrangements include airlifting exam papers to designated centers, and provisions have been made for students unable to travel, including those hospitalized due to injuries.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura assured the public that all necessary measures are in place to maintain the integrity and continuity of the examinations despite the tragedy. Rescue teams continue to work in challenging conditions, searching for survivors and recovering bodies from the affected villages.
