The government has reaffirmed its commitment to operationalizing the long-awaited Todonyang border post in Turkana County, a development expected to strengthen trade, enhance security, and improve relations along the Kenya–Ethiopia border.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen told Parliament that all national agencies were ready to deploy staff and begin operations once the required infrastructure is in place. He was responding to a question by Turkana Senator James Lomenen regarding the status of the project.

Murkomen explained that Kenya’s border points are managed by the Directorate of Immigration Services, working alongside other agencies brought together under the Border Control and Operations Coordination Committee (BCOCC), which was formed in 2014 to harmonize border management.

According to the CS, BCOCC conducted an extensive survey on September 7, 2018, identifying Todonyang as a priority location for a new border post due to emerging security, trade, and population needs along the frontier. The survey findings were forwarded to the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC), which approved the establishment of the post.

Official communication approving the project was issued through a letter dated May 23, 2022, designating the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) as the lead agency.

Following approval, KRA wrote to the Turkana County Government on November 17, 2022, requesting 50 acres of land in Todonyang for the construction of the facility. In February 2023, a multi-agency team from KRA and the Border Management Secretariat met county officials and visited the proposed site.

However, Murkomen noted that the land has not yet been officially allocated and urged the county government to expedite the process.

The national government has demonstrated full commitment to operationalizing the Todonyang border post, Murkomen said.
All relevant agencies are ready to deploy their teams once the necessary infrastructure and buildings are completed.

To support emerging and future border points, the Directorate of Immigration Services trained and graduated 286 immigration officers in November 2024.

Murkomen added that the government is also rolling out integrated border management systems, modern technologies aimed at improving security screening, efficiency, and coordination across all entry and exit points.

Meanwhile, efforts to sustain cross-border harmony continue, with joint peace meetings held between communities on both sides of Todonyang.

The Todonyang border post remains a top government priority, seen as critical to boosting regional trade, improving security, and strengthening Ethiopia–Kenya relations.
