Floods Displace 71 KCSE Candidates in Trans Nzoia, County Provides Emergency Support

Trans Nzoia County, November 8, 2025 — Seventy-one KCSE candidates from Soymining Secondary School have been displaced by devastating floods, prompting urgent intervention from the Trans Nzoia County government and well-wishers.

The floods, caused by several days of heavy rainfall, submerged over 3,100 acres of farmland and destroyed homes, cutting off students’ access to their school during the national exams.

Affected learners were temporarily relocated to AIC Kobos Secondary School, with 33 boys accommodated at Kobos Boys’ and 38 girls at Kobos Girls’ Secondary School, where they are expected to stay for approximately two weeks.

Trans Nzoia County Executive for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, Eliud Tormoi, led the emergency response, providing food, bedding, and other essentials to the stranded students. We are committed to ensuring the candidates finish their exams smoothly, Tormoi said, adding that the floods had traumatised many learners.

School principals called for additional support, highlighting shortages of bedding, toiletries, and sanitary products. Pamela Lumadede, principal of Soymining Secondary, thanked the county for its quick response but appealed for more assistance to ensure students remain comfortable and focused.

Authorities confirmed that displaced families have also been relocated to safer grounds as rescue and relief efforts continue.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities in flood-prone areas of Trans Nzoia, and the importance of coordinated government and community responses to safeguard education and livelihoods.
