Mombasa Criminals Put on Notice as Security Agencies Step Up Patrols

Security authorities in Mombasa have intensified operations across the coastal city following a surge in criminal activities that have left residents anxious and business owners calling for action. The County Security Committee, led by Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Nur, announced a multi-agency crackdown targeting gang networks and street criminals who have been terrorizing residents in areas such as Kisauni, Likoni, and Old Town. The operation, which began this week, includes night patrols, police roadblocks, and intelligence-led raids aimed at restoring calm and public confidence.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Mombasa Police Headquarters, Commissioner Nur warned that law enforcement will not hesitate to use the full force of the law against individuals or groups found engaging in criminal acts. He noted that recent incidents of robbery, drug peddling, and youth gang activity have painted a negative image of Mombasa, a city known globally for its tourism and cultural heritage. We are determined to ensure Mombasa remains safe for residents, investors, and visitors. Anyone found aiding criminal elements will face prosecution, he said. The crackdown will also involve collaboration between local police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Residents and community leaders have welcomed the move, saying insecurity had begun affecting daily life and economic activity. Business operators at Kongowea Market and along Moi Avenue said they have seen an increased police presence in recent days. It’s been long overdue. Many of us have lost goods and customers due to constant muggings, said Mariam Ali, a trader in Majengo. Civil society groups, however, urged police to uphold human rights during the exercise and avoid unnecessary harassment of innocent youth, stressing the need for rehabilitation programs for first-time offenders.

Looking ahead, the Mombasa County Government plans to support the initiative by installing more CCTV cameras in high-risk areas and working with youth groups to create employment and training opportunities. County Police Commander Stephen Matu emphasized that sustained community involvement is essential for long-term safety. Security is a shared responsibility, he said. When citizens work with law enforcement, we can dismantle these criminal gangs once and for all.
