Dispute Over Nyandarua University Construction Escalates

On October 4, 2025, a standoff occurred in Kaptein area, Ol-Kalou Constituency, Nyandarua County, over the proposed construction of Nyandarua University. Two opposing groups clashed: one advocating for the university’s campus, the other insisting the site be reserved for Salient Secondary School.

The planned groundbreaking for the new secondary school, meant to be attended by Education CS Julius Migos, was disrupted when protestors blocked the Ol-Kalou–Gilgil road. Police had to use tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdilasaak Jaldesa affirmed that the university project is a National Government initiative and would proceed. County leaders, including Women Representative Faith Gitau and MPs Njuguna Kiaraho, Kwenya Thuku, and George Gachagua, emphasized that 90 acres had been set aside for the university, with remaining land allocated for the secondary school.

The officials urged residents, particularly youth, not to sabotage the projects, highlighting that both institutions are intended to spur economic growth and development in the county.
