NLC Moves to Acquire Land for Kitale-Morpus Road

Landowners in West Pokot and Turkana counties have been notified after the National Land Commission (NLC) announced plans to acquire land for the Ksh24.4 billion Kitale-Morpus highway project.

In a notice dated June 19, 2026, the NLC said it intends to acquire 5.2 acres for the two-lane highway, which will span 75 kilometres.

The Commission revised an earlier land acquisition notice by adding new parcels, deleting others, and correcting ownership details to support the road expansion.

The parcels newly included are West Pokot/Morpus GR/36, covering 2.42 acres, West Pokot/Morpus GR/55, covering 1.17 acres, West Pokot/Chepararia/658, covering 0.24 acres, and West Pokot/Morpus Group Ranch, covering 1.36 acres.

The Commission also removed West Pokot/Morpus GR/853, covering 2.18 acres, and West Pokot/Chepararia/558, covering 0.24 acres, from the list of properties earmarked for acquisition.

The notice stated that the NLC plans to acquire the land on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for the construction of the Kenya-South Sudan Road Link, specifically the Kitale-Morpus road upgrading in Trans Nzoia County.

Affected landowners have been asked to present their claims at the County Coordinator’s offices in Trans Nzoia County.

The project is part of the Eldoret-Kitale-Lodwar-Nadapal-Juba corridor, a major international transport route linking Tanzania, Kenya, and South Sudan.

KeNHA is implementing the project with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the road covers about 60 kilometres in West Pokot County and 15 kilometres in Turkana County.

The project is currently in its first phase, which includes the 55-kilometre Lesseru-Kitale road, the 54-kilometre Morpus-Kainuk road, and the 75-kilometre Kainuk-Lokichar road.

Once completed, the highway is expected to improve connectivity and strengthen economic integration between Kenya and its regional neighbours, especially landlocked South Sudan.

With several parcels now designated for acquisition, affected owners are expected to take part in the compensation and inquiry process before construction moves to the next phase.
