Authorities are probing the death of a security guard during an overnight break-in at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Homa Bay.

The intruders escaped with a computer used for student registration.

The slain guard was named as 46-year-old Elisha Odongo, who was discovered dead inside the college compound on Thursday morning after being assaulted while on duty.

Police said the matter was reported at about 8:45 a.m. by a supervisor from the security firm, after another supervisor found the body during routine patrols at around 4 a.m.

Officers, detectives and crime scene investigators who attended the scene found Odongo lying on the ground with two deep panga wounds on his head.

Initial inquiries showed that the deceased had been posted alone to guard the institution’s ICT office overnight. Investigators found that the suspects cut the office padlocks with an unidentified tool before entering.

Even though the office had more than 10 computers and monitors, the assailants took only one computer and monitor, said to be used for registering and admitting students.

Searches in the area did not result in the recovery of the stolen items or the arrest of any suspects.

Crime scene investigators processed the scene before the body was taken to the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police have begun inquiries to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assault and theft.

In a separate incident, police in Nyamira County have opened a murder investigation after a man allegedly attacked during burial preparations died from his injuries nearly three weeks later.

The matter was first treated as a serious assault but was upgraded to a murder probe after the victim died.

Police said 39-year-old Peter Ngoi Ouya suffered internal injuries after two men known to him allegedly kicked him in the lower abdomen at about 3 a.m. on May 28, 2026, while he was helping with burial preparations in a village in Nyamira North Sub-County.

The assault was reported at Nyamusi Police Station on June 7, before his condition deteriorated. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Nyamira County Referral Hospital on June 12.

Police said he died at about 3:05 a.m. on June 14. The death was formally reported at Nyamusi Police Station on June 18, leading investigators to reclassify the matter from assault to murder.

The body remains at Nyamira County Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination as detectives track the two suspects accused of assaulting the deceased.
