At least three people were shot and injured after violence erupted during a women and youth empowerment event at Umoja Secondary School in Kuresoi North, Nakuru County.

The event, led by Susan Kihika, descended into chaos when Alfred Mutai arrived, sparking a confrontation between rival groups of supporters.

The three victims, who suffered gunshot wounds to their hands and legs, were taken to Molo Level 4 Hospital for treatment. Police said investigations are underway to determine who fired the shots.

One victim, Job Kiprono, who was shot in the right hand, thanked members of the public for rescuing him and helping him get prompt medical attention.

From his hospital bed, Kiprono said he was grateful to the public for assisting him and ensuring he received medical care on time.

The violence also caused destruction, with at least three vehicles, including one belonging to MP Mutai, vandalized by rival groups.

A bus was set on fire as youths armed with stones and sticks engaged in running battles around the venue.

Despite the unrest, the empowerment event later resumed under heavy police security.

Local leaders condemned what they described as rising political intolerance in Kuresoi North, accusing politicians of inciting young people into violent confrontations.

They urged leaders to show restraint and called on residents to embrace peaceful political engagement to prevent further unrest.

The damaged vehicles were towed to the local police station.

The clashes come amid growing political tensions in various parts of the country as early realignments continue ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Police said investigations into the shootings and property destruction are ongoing. No arrests had been made by Friday evening.

The area is emerging as one seen as vulnerable to chaos ahead of the 2027 polls.
