A devastating fire has left seven traders in Kisumu’s Robert Ouko estate facing staggering losses, with the plight of one single mother highlighting the human cost of the tragedy. The blaze, which broke out at around 2100hrs, reduced shops to ashes and deprived families of their livelihoods.
Authorities are still investigating the official cause, though many victims suspect an electrical fault. For those affected, the damage is more than financial; it has shattered dreams built over years of sacrifice.
Evaline Oricho, a single mother who relied entirely on her small shop to feed her children, now stands among the ruins with nothing left. “My shop was everything to me and my children. Now it is all gone. I don’t even have money to buy food. I am pleading for urgent help,” she said, her voice filled with despair.
Her story reflects the suffering of others who watched their investments disappear overnight. Mildred Auma, another trader, said: “We have been left with nothing. Our shops are gone, our stock is gone, and our hope is gone. We need help to start again, otherwise we will sink deeper into poverty.”
The fire has left the seven traders desperate, many of whom had poured their life savings into businesses that were their only source of income. Another victim lamented: “It is painful to watch your sweat and sacrifice vanish in flames. We are desperate. We need the government and well-wishers to come to our rescue.”
For Evaline, the burden is even heavier. As a single mother, she faces the challenge of rebuilding her livelihood while ensuring her children do not go hungry. Her appeal highlights the vulnerability of women who carry family responsibilities alone, often with little support.
The tragedy has plunged Robert Ouko estate into mourning, leaving behind charred ruins and broken spirits. As investigations continue, the victims’ plea remains urgent, as their families now face hunger and destitution without immediate support.
The fire has not only destroyed shops; it has torn apart the fragile hope that sustained hardworking traders, leaving single mothers like Evaline in ruins and facing an uncertain future.
