Senator Essy Okenyuri has called for enhanced digital literacy and efforts to combat gender-based online harassment, emphasizing that Kenya’s rapidly changing digital environment presents both significant opportunities and potential dangers to democratic processes.

During a discussion on artificial intelligence, elections, and online abuse hosted by the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) in collaboration with Oxfam, Okenyuri highlighted how technology is transforming public conversations and electoral systems, stressing the necessity of cultivating digital environments that are inclusive and respectful for all participants.

As technological advancements increasingly influence public debates and democratic institutions, it becomes essential to construct a digital framework that accommodates everyone while maintaining safety and respect, she conveyed to the attendees.

The gathering examined the global impact of artificial intelligence on electoral processes, including its applications in addressing false information and improving openness, alongside apprehensions regarding potential manipulation and unfair biases.

Attendees underscored the ongoing issue of gender-specific online mistreatment, which particularly affects female politicians and undermines their engagement in political activities.

Okenyuri stressed the significance of providing young individuals with digital competencies, pointing out that internet proficiency can enable them to capitalize on prospects in online business development, personal branding, and commercial ventures.

We should continuously adapt to emerging technologies while guiding the youth to utilize digital knowledge constructively for personal advancement, including promoting their enterprises and exploring e-commerce possibilities, she stated.

Concerns about digital mistreatment have intensified approaching the 2027 elections, as civil society organizations caution that unregulated harassment might suppress female representation in political spheres.

KEWOPA remains committed to advocating for more robust legislation and partnerships with technology corporations to reduce online aggression.
