Former Chief Justice David Maraga has denounced what he termed as violent and illegal police conduct against peaceful protesters in the capital, describing it as a clear infringement of constitutional entitlements.
In a communiqué released from Lang’ata Police Station on June 8, 2026, Maraga narrated how United Green Movement (UGM) activists were assaulted and detained while participating in a sanctioned march intended to safeguard a portion of Nairobi National Park from disputed development projects.
The former judicial leader remained confined at the facility with nine other individuals for most of the day following his apprehension during demonstrations opposing the alleged appropriation of territory within Nairobi National Park.
Maraga, serving as the UGM Party Co-Chairman and 2027 Presidential Candidate, indicated that the demonstration had received proper authorization but encountered excessive force.
“The magnitude of the state’s reaction toward a small group of peaceful citizens exercising their entitlement to protest is repugnant and intolerable,” he stated, noting that nine compatriots were imprisoned without formal charges.
He accused authorities of employing oppressive measures to fracture Kenyan society along socio-economic and tribal divisions, vowing not to serve as a tool in such stratagem.
“Law enforcement cannot function beyond the legal framework they are obligated to enforce. The administration must cease this perversion of justice and attacks on fundamental rights,” Maraga declared.
The retired Chief Justice characterized the occurrence as a pivotal juncture for Kenya, calling upon citizens to mobilize in protection of democratic principles.
“We must collectively stand to safeguard our Constitution and liberties, and return our country to governance predicated on legal authority, fairness and impartiality for every individual irrespective of standing, advantage, age, sex, race or background,” he emphasized.
Maraga expressed gratitude to supporters for their unified stance and pledged to persist in advocating for legitimate democratic discourse.
