A postmortem examination has confirmed that a 27-year-old Nanyuki resident lost his life from a gunshot injury during demonstrations against a planned Ebola quarantine facility in Laikipia County.
The examination notes indicate that the projectile entered the front and side of his left shoulder and exited through the right upper shoulder region.
The independent examination was sponsored by VOCAL Africa, a human rights group, which subsequently called for immediate accountability, insisting that those responsible face criminal charges without delay.
“The medical evaluation determined the bullet entered the anterolateral aspect of his left shoulder and exited through the right upper shoulder area, establishing evident use of lethal force,” VOCAL Africa declared.
The postmortem results have increased public pressure on authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the 27-year-old’s death during what initially began as a community demonstration.
The protests began after the Kenyan government and the United States announced plans to establish a quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base to accommodate Americans and others exposed to Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hundreds of Nanyuki residents filled the streets, obstructing roadways and disrupting transportation, claiming they were never consulted and expressing fears that the facility would present significant health dangers to their community.
The demonstrations also received political support, with Nyandarua Senator John Methu contending that American citizens should receive treatment in their own country, not transferred overseas.
As tensions increased, the protests evolved into confrontations with riot police, resulting in two fatalities and two individuals sustaining gunshot injuries.
Authorities detained several protesters. They were subsequently presented at Nanyuki Law Courts facing charges of obstructing motor vehicles.
The High Court of Kenya has intervened, halting the contentious project while awaiting legal review, as the country awaits clarification on how a demonstration resulted in a young man’s death.
Despite the judicial directive and widespread resistance, the U.S. and the Kenyan government maintain their commitment to the plan, emphasizing the importance of early preparation before any outbreak reaches the nation.
VOCAL Africa affirms its solidarity with the family in calling for a transparent criminal investigation and the immediate prosecution of individuals responsible for ending this young man’s life.
