The Kenya Meteorological Services Authority has advised residents across the country to prepare for intermittent rainfall and chilly conditions this weekend, extending from Friday, June 5, through Monday, June 8.
In its weekend weather bulletin, the meteorological department indicated that precipitation is anticipated in several regions including Central Kenya, Rift Valley, Western areas, Lake Victoria basin, the Coast, and North Eastern districts.
According to Kenya Met, at least 21 counties will experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. These affected counties include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.
Showers are expected to persist throughout the day following night precipitation, with rainfall conditions likely continuing into the evening.
In the Central region, light precipitation is forecast for the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.
Comparable weather conditions are predicted for the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale, along with the Tana Delta and the North Eastern regions of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo.
Although most regions are expected to experience rainfall this weekend, the meteorological service predicts dry and sunny conditions in the South Eastern Lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, and Kajiado.
In addition to sporadic rainfall this weekend, the meteorological authority has also cautioned about extremely cold temperatures, especially in Central Kenya where nightly lows could drop to 6°C.
The counties impacted by the cold weather conditions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.
Concurrently, daytime temperatures in certain areas of the country are expected to rise as high as 37°C, especially in North-western Kenya and along the Coast.
Elevated daytime temperatures have also been forecast in Western, Lake Victoria basin and Rift Valley region, where temperatures during the day will fluctuate between 11°C and 12°C for the next five days.
