The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has verified the detention of comedian and activist Erick Omondi on June 5, 2026, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
He was apprehended by officers from DCI Central in collaboration with CRIB Nairobi Region following intelligence described as credible by investigators gathered during their ongoing probe.
The individual is associated with purported offenses reportedly committed during the recent fuel-related demonstrations in Nairobi.
“He is currently providing a statement at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters while being processed for potential court appearance.”
According to the DCI, the detention forms part of continuing investigations involving multiple other suspects connected to the same incidents.
The agency stated that some of those suspects had previously been apprehended and charged in court on May 18, 2026, as inquiries proceed.
The DCI has reminded the public that the Constitution ensures the right to assemble, picket and demonstrate peacefully, yet these rights must be exercised responsibly and within legal boundaries.
The agency cautioned that any criminal acts committed under the pretext of protests, demonstrations or civic actions will be investigated and addressed firmly.
It added: “The DCI will not delay in taking decisive action against anyone involved in such offenses. Regardless of where you conceal, the law will eventually reach you.”
The matter remains under investigation. The DCI has maintained that all suspects will be handled in accordance with the law as inquiries into the alleged offences progress.
Erick had previously posted on his social platforms claiming that he had been detained by a group of men.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino later confirmed that he had visited comedian and activist Erick Omondi at the Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters following his arrest.
In a statement posted on social media, he said: “We are with @ericomondi at Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters. Eric was arrested today at JKIA at 12.15PM…. Let’s meet in Court on Monday and come prepared. #FreeEricOmondi”
