International actress Kate Walsh, renowned for her role in Grey’s Anatomy, will travel to Mombasa, Kenya to promote African ocean conservation and support local communities.
Walsh, a global ocean advocate, will collaborate with specialists from Oceana, the world’s largest international organization dedicated solely to ocean protection. They will engage with small-scale fishers and community leaders in Mombasa, ensuring that the concerns of local African fishers are addressed when global leaders make critical decisions regarding ocean sustainability, food security, and employment opportunities.
This visit precedes the 11th annual Our Ocean Conference, a significant international gathering.
Scheduled for June 16th to 18th in Mombasa, this marks the first time the conference is hosted in Africa since its inception in 2014. The event has successfully secured over $169 billion in commitments for ocean conservation worldwide.
Oceana reports that African coastlines confront substantial challenges. Despite millions of Africans relying on the ocean for sustenance and livelihoods, marine ecosystems are deteriorating due to pollution, climate change, and excessive fishing practices.
Particular concern surrounds large industrial vessels, including foreign-owned boats, operating in African waters. These operations are criticized for depleting marine resources, with catches exported to affluent nations, leaving insufficient resources for coastal communities that depend on them.
In response, Oceana urges governments to prioritize small-scale fishers. They advocate for conference attendees to implement more stringent regulations against illegal fishing, prevent marine habitat destruction, and disclose vessel ownership information to enhance transparency.
Enhanced vessel monitoring could enable countries to restore fish populations, offering world leaders a chance to enact effective policies that balance environmental protection with the long-term economic security of local fishing communities.
