Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has inaugurated a new Information Communication Technology laboratory at Chebulbul Primary School in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The initiative represents a significant advancement in providing digital education opportunities for rural students.
The ICT facility was established and furnished by the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation together with the Standard Chartered Foundation, focusing on reducing the technological divide among students in disadvantaged areas.
Chebulbul Primary School, situated merely 100 meters from the Global Sports training camp where Kipchoge has trained for 24 years, holds particular significance for the athlete.
During the inauguration ceremony, Kipchoge highlighted his commitment to creating pathways for children from modest backgrounds.
“I am delighted that the school permitted my foundation to collaborate with the Standard Chartered Foundation. I constructed the classrooms while they provided the equipment,” he stated.
“This generation we are nurturing is the future, and I believe nature’s law calls upon us to contribute positively to humanity in every possible way.”
Former head teacher Rael Biwot praised the initiative as revolutionary, observing that the Competency-Based Curriculum heavily depends on digital resources.
“The ICT Laboratory will greatly benefit the students particularly since most instructional activities involve both teachers and students utilizing digital devices. This represents genuine advancement for education,” she observed.
Regina Mukiri, Head of Community Impact and Engagement at Standard Chartered Kenya, clarified that the collaboration commenced in 2024 and forms part of community initiatives supported by the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.
“Digital capabilities remain our primary focus as society becomes increasingly technology-oriented. Consequently, technological access serves as a means of empowerment linking youth to global opportunities,” she explained.
The ICT center will offer connectivity and contemporary educational resources, guaranteeing that students in remote regions remain competitive in today’s digital landscape.
