US, Kenya Discuss Ebola Quarantine Center for At-Risk Americans

by KenyaPolls

The United States and Kenya are engaged in negotiations regarding the establishment of a quarantine facility in Kenya for American citizens who have been exposed to the current Ebola outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Reports indicate that the proposed facility would be operated by personnel from the US Public Health Service and would serve to isolate and monitor Americans deemed to be at high risk of infection or those who have tested positive for the virus while in the area.

The plan has not yet been approved by the Kenyan government, with reports suggesting that Nairobi has requested additional foreign assistance as part of the discussions. The precise location of the proposed quarantine center has also not been revealed.

Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei stated that he was not fully informed about the matter and was unaware of any request for additional support.

This development occurs as global concern mounts over the Ebola outbreak involving the rare Bundibugyo strain, which the World Health Organization has designated as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Recent statistics show that the outbreak has led to hundreds of suspected cases and fatalities in the DRC, while Uganda has also reported confirmed infections and deaths.

The United States has already implemented enhanced preventive measures, including increased airport screenings and travel restrictions for individuals who have recently been in affected countries such as the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Reports also suggest that some U.S. public health officers have received notifications preparing them for potential deployment to Kenya if the facility is approved.

Kenya has simultaneously increased surveillance at border crossings and enhanced isolation preparedness measures.

On Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale stated that the government remains on high alert at all border points and within designated high-risk counties to prevent Ebola from entering the country.

The Cabinet Secretary said measures have been implemented to prevent potential infiltration of the deadly outbreak currently spreading through the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and portions of neighboring Uganda.

I urge residents, particularly those along the border with Uganda, to take the health ministry’s precautionary advisories with the utmost seriousness and to strictly follow all issued guidelines, Duale stated.

The World Health Organization has warned about the severity of the disease, classifying it as a highly contagious and frequently fatal condition that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids.

Unlike more common strains, the Bundibugyo virus currently has no approved vaccine or specific licensed therapeutic treatment, rendering aggressive containment the only viable defensive strategy.

In response to the escalating crisis, authorities took the drastic measure of suspending all commercial flights to and from Bunia, the capital of the resource-rich Ituri province in eastern DRC, where the virus continues to spread rapidly.
