The Nairobi Water Company is preparing to enforce penalties against unlawful water meters in the capital, focusing on residents in Utawala and Mihango estates.
According to a notice issued by the company, enforcement actions will begin on Thursday, May 28, following the expiration of the 21-day grace period extended to the residents.
In its communication to affected residents, the company urged them to formalize their water and sewer connections to avoid potential penalties.
“Final days remaining. The 21-day grace period provided to customers in Utawala and Mihango with unmetered connections concludes on 28th May 2026,” the notice stated.
According to the agency, it will officially commence enforcement on Thursday, with those found to have illegally connected water and sewage services facing disconnections, substantial fines, and possible imprisonment.
The utility further warned that impacted households and businesses may be disconnected from the main supply, with reconnection requiring a Ksh5,000 fee plus double deposit, while sewer disconnection will cost Ksh15,000 where applicable.
“Failure to comply within the grace period will result in enforcement measures without further notice,” the company added.
Customers who do not comply risk penalties, including a Ksh30,000 fine for residential unlawful connections and up to Ksh100,000 for commercial users, along with retroactive water usage charges dating back to October 2024.
The company has confirmed it will not extend the grace period due to non-compliance from certain businesses and residential estates.
This indicates that enforcement will officially begin on Thursday, May 28, with the company encouraging those not yet in compliance to do so immediately.
“Complete your water and sewer connection regularization today to avoid last-minute inconvenience,” the agency stated.
The initiative comes during the company’s intensified efforts to enhance monitoring and decrease non-revenue water.
