Kenya’s active taxpayer population has nearly doubled over the past six years, demonstrating enhanced tax registration and compliance initiatives by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
KRA statistics reveal that active taxpayers climbed from 5.1 million during the 2018/19 fiscal year to 9.669 million by 2023/24.
Forecasts for the 2024/25 fiscal year suggest the total will reach 9.87 million taxpayers.
The consistent growth indicates greater involvement in the formal taxation system as the government seeks to broaden revenue collection to support development initiatives and public services.
The most substantial increase occurred between the 2021/22 and 2022/23 fiscal years, when active taxpayers rose from 7.225 million to 8.153 million.
Recent years have seen KRA strengthen digital taxation frameworks, taxpayer awareness programs, and enforcement actions to boost compliance and expand the taxpayer base.
These numbers also signify heightened economic engagement and the increasing adoption of digital tax platforms by both individuals and enterprises nationwide.
