Haile Selassie Avenue has undergone a significant transformation in the latest phase of Nairobi’s Central Business District restoration initiative, with City Hall announcing additional upgrades planned across the city. The previously dusty and crowded thoroughfare has been revitalized with black and cream tiled walkways, providing a cleaner and more convenient passage for thousands of traders, commuters and residents who utilize the busy route daily. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated that the renovated avenue is intended to facilitate movement for individuals traveling to key destinations such as Wakulima Market, the Easy Coach terminal and offices situated along the corridor. “The formerly dusty Haile Selassie Avenue now presents a completely different appearance with black and cream tile finishes, enhancing accessibility for people visiting Wakulima Market, Easy Coach terminal and businesses along the avenue,” said Sakaja. “This forms part of the continuing CBD walkways restoration project we have been implementing, with additional areas currently undergoing renovation, including the Ambassador district, Taifa Lane and the National Archives vicinity,” he explained. The county administration is also preparing to extend the improvements to additional sections of the metropolis, with Kimathi Street and Moi Avenue among the next locations scheduled for refurbishment. “The renewed Haile Selassie Avenue has improved traffic flow, and arrangements are in progress to continue walkway upgrades from Kimathi Street to Nation Centre and along Moi Avenue as far as Central Police Station. We are undertaking these measures to enhance Nairobi for all its residents,” he added. The county government indicates that the broader effort is focused on establishing a cleaner, safer and more navigable urban environment while enhancing the overall experience for both local inhabitants and visitors to Nairobi.
