News and current affairs maintain a powerful presence on Kenya’s radio platforms, commanding approximately half of all audience attention.
The most recent Communications Authority of Kenya report analyzing audience metrics from January to March 2026 reveals that news-focused programming captures an impressive 46.67% of listeners. This significant dominance reflects a populace deeply engaged with current events, relying on radio as their principal channel for timely information and community news.
Despite news programming’s leading position, recreational audio content holds a substantial secondary role. Entertainment programs and talk shows emerge as the second most favored radio format, representing 21.11% of total listenership.
Music programming maintains close proximity as it retains 15.21% of Kenyan audiences, with sports broadcasts claiming a dedicated 13.94% share. Collectively, these three entertainment segments constitute the foundation of daytime and commuting hour radio schedules.
By comparison, specialized programming represents only a minor portion of radio airtime. Religious and inspirational content attracts a modest 6.39% of listeners.
The balance of listeners is nearly evenly split between educational content at 1.03% and lifestyle or cultural features at 1.02%.
Ultimately, though music and sports maintain their consistent presence, it is the demand for current news and compelling daily talk shows that sustains the pulse of modern Kenyan radio.
