KPC, Vivo Energy Launch Clean Cooking Program for Mombasa Vulnerable Families

by KenyaPolls

KPC Foundation, the charitable arm implementing Kenya Pipeline Company’s corporate social investment initiatives, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, introduced a clean cooking program targeting vulnerable households in Jomvu Kuu, Mombasa County.

This initiative forms part of the Foundation’s broader Environmental Conservation Programs, which concentrate on advancing clean energy adoption, biodiversity conservation, and climate change response strategies.

Phase 1 of the program is being executed in collaboration with Vivo Energy Kenya, the entity responsible for distributing and marketing Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in Kenya. The initiative directly confronts the detrimental dependence on conventional cooking fuels like firewood and charcoal, which are primary contributors to indoor air pollution, deforestation, and environmental deterioration.

Under Phase 1, 90 households in Jomvu Kuu will each receive a 6kg LPG kit consisting of a gas cylinder, burner, grill, and an initial gas fill to facilitate the shift to cleaner, safer, and more environmentally friendly cooking alternatives.

Addressing the launch, KPC Foundation Manager Ms. Rachel Gathoni stated: “At KPC Foundation, we are dedicated to fostering sustainable community impact through initiatives that enhance livelihoods while promoting environmental conservation. This clean cooking program demonstrates our commitment to assisting vulnerable households in obtaining safer and healthier energy solutions, while supporting the national Climate Action Agenda.”

For more than six decades, Afrigas has led the introduction of LPG cooking gas throughout the nation, pioneering a cleaner alternative to traditional coal and wood fuels that many households previously utilized.

Today, that heritage continues with a firm commitment to making clean energy not merely accessible, but the norm in residences and enterprises nationwide.

“At Vivo Energy Kenya, through our Afrigas brand, we recognize the kitchen as the core of every home, a space where families unite, share meals, and experience tranquility. That is why safety, reliability, and confidence in cooking are not choices; they are necessities. We persist in providing clean, safe, economical, available, and consistent LPG energy solutions that enable families across Kenya to cook with assurance and flourish daily,” expressed Angela Munyua, Communications Manager at Vivo Energy Kenya.

The initiative extends KPC Foundation’s expanding environmental presence in coastal Kenya.

The Foundation has planted over one million mangrove tree seedlings and empowered youth and women through programs, including beekeeping and crab farming, all in support of its enduring dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable community advancement.
