Building Collapse in Bombolulu Injures One During Demolition Work

A person sustained injuries and was transported to medical facilities following the collapse of a building undergoing demolition in Mombasa’s Bombolulu district on Tuesday, causing alarm among local inhabitants and bystanders.

Emergency services swiftly arrived at the location where officials worked to cordon off the site and evaluate the full scope of destruction resulting from the structural failure.

Observers reported that a portion of the edifice unexpectedly gave way during demolition activities, entombing a person under the wreckage before rescue teams successfully extracted the survivor.

The casualty received medical attention at a healthcare facility while rescue crews maintained their search of the debris to confirm no additional individuals remained trapped.

Nevertheless, it remained unclear at the time if the demolition process had received approval from Mombasa County authorities.

This recent occurrence has reignited apprehensions regarding construction safety protocols and regulatory enforcement throughout Kenya against a backdrop of increasing structural failures documented over recent years.

In April of the previous year, residents adjacent to Coast General Hospital in Mombasa experienced heightened anxiety when, raising concerns about potential structural collapse.

Building occupants had to vacate the premises after county authorities and national security personnel, under the direction of Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno, intervened due to heavy rains compromising structural integrity.

Initial evaluations at that time suggested the structure had been erected without compliance with appropriate safety and engineering standards, placing inhabitants in considerable danger.

Mombasa County Fire and Disaster Chief Officer Ibrahim Basafar disclosed that the building’s basement had already collapsed, causing the entire edifice to lean precariously.

‘Observe this situation here? One floor has collapsed, including the basement. The structure is already tilting, and upon careful inspection, the construction did not proceed with proper dimensions,’ Basafar remarked during the evacuation operation.

A month subsequent, a multi-agency task force convened by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir presented alarming conclusions regarding the collapse and demolition of another tall building within the county.

The report identified credential leasing among certified engineers and architects, inadequate examinations by county representatives and the National Construction Authority (NCA), deficient oversight, and absence of essential geological surveys as primary contributors to the structural deficiencies.

The Bombolulu structural failure follows an incident in March of the current year when a section of a 22-story building in progress collapsed, resulting in one fatality and entrapment of numerous workers under the debris.
