The Kenyan administration has stepped up actions to protect citizens from escalating fuel prices caused by the persistent conflict in Iran, which has disrupted global oil supply networks and increased petroleum product costs internationally. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced that the authorities are deploying multiple strategies focused on stabilizing fuel rates and reducing pressure on consumers confronting higher transportation and living expenses. Speaking on Friday while inspecting development initiatives in South Imenti Constituency, Meru County, Prof. Kindiki highlighted that the Persian Gulf conflict had substantially raised expenses related to fuel imports, insurance, and maritime shipping worldwide. “The costs of fuel, insurance, and shipping have escalated significantly due to the hostilities in Iran. This predicament has impacted numerous countries across the globe, but we are dedicated to ensuring Kenyans are not adversely affected by these international disturbances,” stated the Deputy President. He disclosed that the administration had already decreased Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel from 16 percent to 8 percent as an effort to reduce pump prices. Furthermore, the government has allocated Sh5 billion to subsidize fuel expenses while officials continue investigating additional measures to shield residents from the mounting costs. “We are pursuing all viable approaches to normalize fuel prices. We do not desire Kenyans to endure hardships from increased fuel expenses, elevated transport charges, and growing living costs,” he emphasized. Prof. Kindiki requested Kenyans to remain patient as the administration develops comprehensive solutions to address the consequences of the worldwide oil crisis. “It is not our goal to witness citizens facing difficulties. We are urging Kenyans to exercise patience as these strategies are implemented,” he mentioned. During the visit, the Deputy President examined the continuing construction of the Nkubu-Rubiri-Kamurita Road, which is approaching completion, along with the Rubiri Last Mile Electricity Connection Project designed to extend electricity accessibility in the area. Subsequently, while addressing community members at Rubiri Shopping Centre, Prof. Kindiki guaranteed residents that all ongoing government projects in the county would be finished as scheduled, with further development programs commencing soon. Meru County has become one of the principal recipients of the national road infrastructure plan, with more than Sh39 billion designated for completing delayed roads and constructing new ones throughout various constituencies. The administration has also reserved Sh3.7 billion for building 17 kilometers of connecting roads within Meru town as part of initiatives to enhance the municipality’s pursuit of city status. Road enhancement projects in Nkubu town are also in progress. In the energy domain, the government has provided Sh1.3 billion under the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Program to connect at least 16,000 households to electricity countywide. “We are completely dedicated to improving the living conditions of Meru residents through infrastructure, electricity, healthcare, and housing initiatives. We will guarantee all these projects are finalized within the established timeframes,” Prof. Kindiki affirmed. Among other prominent initiatives underway in the county is the elevation of Meru Referral Hospital to a Level 6 facility, an initiative projected to enhance specialized healthcare services in the area. The county is also experiencing substantial advancement in affordable housing programs, institutional and lodging developments, in addition to the construction of over 20 contemporary markets intended to stimulate commerce and economic expansion. Simultaneously, the Deputy President called upon political opponents to ready themselves for a merit-oriented political competition preceding the next General Election. “When we return here next year requesting your backing, we will showcase our achievements from the past five years. Our competitors must also be prepared to explain their accomplishments during their tenure in office,” he stated. The Deputy President was accompanied by Mutuma M’Ethingia, Kathuri Murungi, Shadrack Mwiti, Moses Kirima, several Members of County Assembly, and local community members.
