Kenya has rededicated itself to advancing Africa’s digital transformation through strategic global partnerships, investments in digital infrastructure, research collaborations, and responsible governance of emerging technologies.
Addressing a high-level Africa-Europe digital cooperation event in Nairobi, held concurrently with the Africa Forward Summit, Information, Communications and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo stated that Kenya aims to establish itself as a premier technology and innovation center in the region.
The gathering united delegates, development partners, innovators, researchers, and policy makers from across Africa and Europe to discuss the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital infrastructure, and international technological collaboration.
Kabogo noted that Africa’s digital progress is accelerating, but stressed the continent’s need to enhance its capacity for developing trusted infrastructure, supporting scientific research, cultivating digital talent, safeguarding data, and actively influencing global technology governance frameworks.
He emphasized that African nations need to collaborate to prevent the continent from falling behind as emerging technologies continue to reshape economies and societies globally.
The Cabinet Secretary outlined Kenya’s continuous efforts to expand national fiber-optic connectivity, enhance digital public infrastructure, and improve access to online government services. He explained that these initiatives seek to establish Kenya as a dependable regional center for data services, cloud computing, and innovation-focused investments.
Kabogo also emphasized the significance of responsible technology governance, especially during the current era of rapid AI adoption, stating that governments must implement systems that encourage innovation while preserving public trust and data security.
He commended the Africa-Europe Foundation, Digital Africa, and other international partners for their collaboration with the Kenyan Government in promoting digital advancement and enhancing cooperation on emerging technologies.
During a separate event earlier in the day, Kabogo accompanied President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron at the University of Nairobi for the launch of the Africa Forward Summit Business Forum.
The Cabinet Secretary characterized Kenya’s expanding partnership with France in science, engineering, and innovation as a crucial step in equipping Kenyan youth with contemporary digital skills and technological infrastructure.
He indicated that this partnership would enable young people to capitalize on opportunities in the digital economy while preparing them to influence the future of innovation across the continent.
The summit has drawn participants from government, academia, the private sector, and development agencies, with dialogues centered on digital inclusion, innovation ecosystems, AI governance, cybersecurity, and investment in future technologies.
Attendees voiced confidence that enhanced Africa-Europe collaboration would create new prospects for economic growth, skill development, and technology-driven transformation throughout Africa.
