Nyang’au Araka reports on recent developments
The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has implemented comprehensive measures to enhance patient confidentiality, dignity, and privacy throughout all healthcare establishments nationwide.
According to a communiqué signed by Secretary General Lyndah Kemunto, the organization characterized these principles as “fundamental” and cautioned that infringements would result in disciplinary actions, including penalties against medical professionals and healthcare organizations.
The declaration, made public on Friday, mandates that hospitals, medical centers, and individual practitioners maintain secure storage of patient records with restricted access to authorized staff only.
Additionally, it forbids conversations regarding patient circumstances in public areas or through methods that could compromise personal confidentiality.
“Every citizen of Kenya is entitled to healthcare services provided in a setting that upholds their dignity and protects their personal data,” KMA emphasized, noting that confidentiality plays a vital role in fostering trust between patients and healthcare workers.
Beyond documentation, the association highlighted the significance of both physical and emotional respect.
Healthcare establishments must offer confidential areas for consultations and procedures, with particular consideration needed when addressing vulnerable populations including minors, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities.
“Privacy respect is mandatory; it represents an obligation that characterizes the ethical foundation of our profession,” the communiqué stated.
KMA instructed all medical facilities to implement periodic staff education on confidentiality procedures and to develop transparent mechanisms for reporting violations.
Individuals were urged to report any breaches, with guarantees that such reports would be examined promptly and completely.
The organization promised to take firm action against those found in violation, emphasizing that responsibility is crucial for preserving public faith in the healthcare sector.
This initiative arrives during increasing societal apprehension about improperly managed patient information that has resulted in social stigma and unfair treatment.
Through strengthening these guidelines, KMA seeks to reestablish confidence in the healthcare framework and ensure that all Kenyans receive attention in a considerate and protected setting.
The group concluded by restating their dedication to maintaining professional standards and defending patient rights, asserting that dignity and confidentiality must continue to be central to service provision.
