The Financial Inclusion Fund, commonly referred to as the Hustler Fund, is establishing collaborations with major financial institutions to allow borrowers with consistent repayment histories to obtain increased credit from commercial banks.
Addressing stakeholders in Nairobi, Hustler Fund Chief Executive Henry Tanui explained that the program intends to develop a seamless progression route for individuals who have established favorable credit profiles via the fund.
Tanui engaged in discussions with Moses Nyabanda, the Chief Executive of Equity Bank Kenya, to examine potential partnerships that would enable Hustler Fund clients to advance to higher borrowing thresholds within the conventional banking framework.
“The dialogue centered on establishing a route for borrowers with robust borrowing and repayment records through the Hustler Fund to access enhanced loan amounts from the formal banking sector,” the fund reported in an official statement.
Launched in November 2022, the Hustler Fund has become one of Kenya’s most extensive financial inclusion initiatives.
The fund reports that over 27 million Kenyans have gained from the program, with more than Sh84 billion distributed as loans and Sh6 billion accumulated in savings.
This initiative has also enhanced the credit profiles of approximately seven million Kenyans previously marked negatively by Credit Reference Bureaus.
Equity Bank Kenya, a prominent financial institution in the region, has actively promoted financial education and business growth through initiatives managed by the Equity Group Foundation.
The institution notes it has educated over 2.3 million young people and women in financial knowledge, business skills, and digital competencies to foster sustainable enterprises and enhance fiscal management.
Under the envisioned collaboration, the Hustler Fund’s client database and extensive national coverage will merge with Equity Bank’s lending expertise and educational initiatives to develop a more comprehensive and accessible credit environment for all Kenyans.
