The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has commenced investigations into the death of a person during violent demonstrations in Luanda Township, Vihiga County.

The disturbances occurred after a police operation aimed at addressing motorcycle-related crime, resulting in the impoundment of twenty motorcycles for verification purposes.

IPOA reported that the protests intensified when demonstrators blocked the Kisumu-Busia highway, disrupted traffic flow, and attempted to reclaim the seized motorcycles from Luanda Police Station by force.

Additionally, looting was reported from nearby establishments, prompting the deployment of additional officers from Sabatia, Vihiga, and Emuhaya Sub-Counties.

According to IPOA monitors, the incident resulted in “one fatality, the arrest of five individuals suspected of involvement in the protests, and injuries sustained by seven police officers.”

The Authority confirmed that ongoing investigations aim to determine whether the force used was appropriate and if proper public order management protocols were followed.

In its statement, IPOA called for calm and constructive dialogue between citizens and police, emphasizing: “IPOA urges members of the public to utilize established channels of engagement with law enforcement to de-escalate tensions during such incidents.”

The Authority offered condolences to the victim’s family and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, including police personnel.

“IPOA remains dedicated to conducting thorough and unbiased investigations into this matter,” stated Vice Chairperson Ms. Ann Wanjiku Mwangi.
