Nairobi Water Pipeline Burst Disrupts Supply in Westlands, Lang’ata, Karen and Other Areas

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) on Friday, May 1, announced a significant temporary water supply disruption affecting several parts of the city following a major pipeline burst along the NCT-Kigoro-Gigiri-Kabete transmission line near Gigiri.

The incident has impacted supply to areas served by the Kabete Reservoirs, leaving thousands of residents and businesses in parts of Nairobi experiencing reduced or completely interrupted water services.

Among the affected areas are Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Upperhill, Ngong Road, Madaraka, Nairobi West, Uthiru, Karen, Kibera, and Lang’ata, including surrounding neighborhoods.

According to the utility company, the pipeline burst caused a significant disruption in distribution flow, forcing an immediate shutdown to allow emergency repair works to begin.

“The incident has disrupted water supply to all areas served from Kabete Reservoirs, including the following and their environs,” the company said in a statement on Friday, May 1.

“Nairobi Water regrets the inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience and understanding of its customers as efforts are made to restore normal supply.”

Even so, the utility firm has assured that teams from the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) and NCWSC are currently on-site carrying out restoration of the pipeline.

The water firm has indicated that normal supply is expected to resume by Saturday, May 2, at around 6am, once repairs are completed and system pressure is fully restored.

In the meantime, residents in affected areas have been urged to use available water sparingly and prioritize essential household needs as the situation is addressed.

To cushion affected customers, NCWSC has maintained that its water tanker (bowser) services remain operational for priority cases, with requests accessible through the USSD code *260# under option 5.

This comes at a time when several roads and estates have been impacted by the effects of flood waters in the capital following heavy rains experienced for much of the week.

Meanwhile, according to the latest update by the Kenya Meteorological Services Authority (KMSA), the heavy rains experienced across several parts of the country are expected to continue.

The weatherman indicated that while the first week of May will continue to see heavy downpours in several regions, conditions are likely to improve in the second half of the month.
