The Kenya Meteorological Department has released a new heavy rainfall alert predicting intensified showers across multiple counties from Wednesday, 22 April to Monday, 27 April 2026, during the ongoing long rains season.
The alert indicates moderate to heavy precipitation exceeding 20mm within 24 hours is anticipated along the Coast and parts of the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands. Showers will likely be accompanied by strong gusty winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s), with coastal sea waves potentially rising above two metres, threatening marine operations.
Counties under high alert include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Garissa, along with portions of Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui and Makueni. Officials have cautioned that the expected conditions may cause flooding, flash floods, and limited visibility in impacted regions.
Citizens are advised to exercise caution by staying away from inundated roads and avoiding walking or driving through flowing water. The department has also recommended that people avoid seeking shelter under trees or near grilled windows during thunderstorms due to the danger of lightning strikes, and to exercise additional caution when participating in maritime activities along the coastline.
The Kenya Red Cross Society has reinforced the alert, urging Kenyans to stay alert and prioritize their safety.
The Red Cross has warned that floodwaters can develop in regions that have not experienced significant rainfall, especially in downstream areas.
