Branch elections for the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) South West commenced Friday morning, with substantial involvement from advocates aiming to influence the society’s leadership and governance structure.

Voting activities are taking place across major locations in Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Homa Bay and Kilgoris law courts, where members are selecting officials for positions such as chairperson, secretary-general, treasurer and representatives to the national council.

At Kisii Law Courts, voter participation remained consistent from early morning, with election officials affirming the process’s credibility and smooth operation.

By midday, participation had exceeded 50 percent, according to branch secretary-general Justice Maenche, who is seeking re-election for a second term.

“We anticipate achieving maximum participation since many of our members are present,” stated Maenche.

The elections mark a pivotal moment for the LSK, as branches nationwide are increasingly influential in shaping policy positions, maintaining professional standards, and contributing to national legal discourseparticularly regarding constitutionalism, governance and access to justice.

Within the region, the South West branch has led efforts to address concerns about legal practice standards, including measures against unqualified practitioners, often called “quacks.”

Zelmer Bonuke, a candidate for the chairperson position, expressed confidence that the elections would bring fresh leadership and reforms to the branch.

Current chairperson Winnie Mirieri, also running for re-election, was present at the Kisii polling station, along with national council representative Davin Biyaki Bonuke.

Both welcomed the high turnout, indicating growing member engagement.

“I have been outspoken in opposing quacks and maintaining professional standards,” remarked Biyaki.

Meanwhile, LSK Deputy President Teresiah Wavinya Nicholas encouraged members to actively engage in the process, stressing the significance of robust branch leadership.

“It is our responsibility to provide support where necessary and highlight priorities within branches. I urge all members to participate and ensure their voices are heard,” she stated.

The election results are anticipated to affect not only the South West branch’s trajectory but also its participation in national legal discussions, as the LSK continues to strengthen its role in governance and the rule of law in Kenya.
