Gusii Women Leaders Fear Political Turmoil Will Deter Female Candidates

The Gusii Women in Leadership Network (GWILN) has expressed concern about escalating political tensions in the lead-up to next year’s elections.
They cautioned that employing youth to provoke violence at political gatherings may intimidate women from pursuing leadership roles.
During a special convening that united female leaders from both Kisii and Nyamira counties, the organization stated that the increasing instability jeopardizes women’s engagement in politics and the wider democratic system.

GWILN founder Edna Kangwana advocated for solidarity among women leaders, emphasizing that unified efforts would enhance their prospects of attaining leadership roles.
“We have committed to standing together and backing one another in vying for positions of authority. Through solidarity, we can shape development and community advancement projects,” Kangwana stated.

The organization additionally called upon security authorities and relevant parties to redouble their initiatives to prevent gender-based violence, which members reported has been increasing in rural communities throughout both counties.

GWILN member Violet Nyapara underscored that enabling women’s political involvement is crucial for tackling community issues.
“Women need to be supported to assume leadership responsibilities. Only through engaged involvement can we confront challenges facing our communities,” she affirmed.

Chief Communications Officer Linet Moruri emphasized the significance of cultivating women’s talents to broaden their impact across different domains.
“Our organization is dedicated to advancing women’s capabilities and improving their presence in multiple sectors,” Moruri noted.

Another participant, Fridah Omweri, advocated for ongoing guidance and cooperation among female leaders to amplify their effect in governance and progress initiatives.

GWILN reaffirmed its dedication to establishing avenues for women to substantially engage in leadership roles while advocating for gender equality throughout societal strata.
