Tearful moments marked the memorial service for the late MP Johana Ngeno as Principal Secretary Charles Hinga became emotional while recounting personal memories of their friendship, showcasing both humor and profound mutual respect.
Held at the Africa Gospel Church in Karen, the ceremony attracted religious leaders, government officials, family members and close friends who came together to honor a man known for his humor, compassion and exceptional intellectual capacity.
Hinga shared anecdotes that revealed the warmth and depth of his connection with Ngeno.
‘He possessed a remarkable sense of humor,’ Hinga stated, his voice trembling as emotion overcame him.
‘As you know, I was struggling with my weight. He would often tell me I needed to visit a place to walk and work up a sweat. He nicknamed me TD Jakes.’
Pressed about the nickname’s origin, Hinga explained that Ng’eno always claimed it was due to his ‘passion,’ but suggested it was because he perspired like the dynamic televangelist during lengthy religious broadcasts.
Laughter mixed with tears in the audience as he portrayed a friendship built on jest but founded on steadfast support.
Of the many qualities Hinga emphasized, wisdom emerged as one of Ngeno’s most distinctive traits. ‘He was a man whose mind operated like a precisely cut diamond,’ Hinga observed. ‘Sharp, multifaceted, and perpetually searching for truth.’
He noted how this wisdom manifested in Ngeno’s handling of national matters, particularly in housing bill discussions, where his input demonstrated measured insight and comprehensive knowledge of legal structures.
‘He didn’t merely speak,’ Hinga stated. ‘He analyzed problems with precision and elevated the discourse.’
Hinga reminded the attendees that Ng’eno was a qualified attorney whose professional journey had encompassed significant obstacles and achievements.
One notable challenge was a public disagreement with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, which demonstrated his steadfastness and commitment to accountability and legal principles.
‘He stood resolute,’ Hinga stated. ‘Not from obstinacy, but from unwavering conviction.’
Throughout his address, Hinga’s emotions were evident. At one moment, tears streamed freely as he brushed them away, visibly consumed by sorrow.
His sorrow mirrored the connection between two men who had navigated important journeys together.
Many present nodded in agreement as Hinga described Ngeno’s humor, wisdom and legal expertisequalities that characterized him in both personal and professional capacities.
For Hinga, the occasion represented not merely remembering a colleague but honoring a brother in belief and mission.
The service concluded with prayers and hymns as participants reflected on a life that had influenced numerous individuals across religious, community and national spheres.
As Hinga embraced family members and friends afterward, it was evident that Ngeno’s legacy would persist, remembered not only for his accomplishments but for the joy, wisdom and loyal friendship he fostered.
