Private Sector Takes Lead Role in WRC Safari Rally 2026

The Government has announced a new collaboration with private entities for the upcoming WRC Safari Rally 2026, signaling a fundamental change in the delivery of this international motorsport event.

Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya stated that the Government of Kenya has established a new strategic alliance with the private sector for the 6th Edition of the WRC Safari Rally 2026.

Mvurya characterized this development as a significant policy achievement. He explained that the initiative embodies a major realization of President William Ruto’s strategic vision for the complete commercialization of sports and sporting assets, along with increased private-sector involvement in advancing and expanding Kenya’s sports landscape.

Under this new arrangement, the private sector will assume a primary responsibility in organizing the event.

Mvurya indicated that the partnership introduces a new chapter for motorsport in Kenya and will substantially reduce the Government’s annual financial commitment to the WRC event.

He noted that this change will enable the Government to allocate funds to other sectors.

According to Mvurya, the move will “release significant resources to be redirected toward the development and enhancement of other sporting disciplines nationwide,” as stated by CS Mvurya.

The Cabinet Secretary confirmed that the private sector will take charge and play a pivotal role in the coordination and implementation of the WRC Safari Rally 2026, backed by a restructured administrative framework aligned with the partnership model.

Mvurya verified that the Government has already fulfilled its primary obligations. “The Government has already paid the promoter’s fee for the event, ensuring a seamless transition and continuous preparations,” he said.

He aimed to reassure Kenyans and stakeholders regarding the preparedness for the rally. Mvurya mentioned that preparations have been completed, adding that “our nation is fully prepared to host another exciting global motorsport event.”

The announcement also indicates administrative shifts within the WRC Safari Rally Project Secretariat. Mvurya stated that the CEO, gazetted and seconded officers, as well as individuals with ongoing contractual agreements, “will be redeployed back into the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports to serve until the completion of their respective contractual terms.”
