Wetang’ula Urges Clergy to Pray for Unity Amid 2027 Political Tensions

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on religious leaders to prioritize prayers for national unity as political tensions escalate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at Parliament Buildings following a Holy Mass to observe Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, the Speaker voiced concern over the increasingly divisive nature of political discussions.

The Mass was led by Fr. Bernard Komlan from Tangaza Diocese, with assistance from Fr. Ken Kipchumba of the Eldoret Diocese.

Advocating for restraint and responsible leadership, Wetang’ula cautioned that reckless speech could exacerbate tensions and widen societal divisions.

‘Kenyans are typically peace-loving, but Father, our political leaders are the source of concern. When they speak publicly, their words often heighten tension. Please pray for us,’ the Speaker stated.

Following the Ash Wednesday observance, he warned against the return of ethnic-based politics, stressing that national unity and peace are fundamental to progress.

‘We must embrace unity and peace. Please pray for those leaders who propagate hatred and division. Only a cohesive nation can advance and develop,’ he added.

As Lent commencedthe Christian season of 40 days dedicated to prayer, fasting, and repentancethe Speaker wished Christians a spiritually fulfilling period.

‘May this sacred season cleanse our intentions, strengthen our faith, and guide us through repentance to the grace of Easter,’ he said.

He also sent greetings to Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan, characterizing it as a period of devotion, self-discipline, and generosity.

‘Ramadan Kareem to my Muslim brothers and sisters. May you experience a month of intention, gratitude, reflection, and purpose,’ the Speaker said.

Wetang’ula urged both Christians and Muslims to pray for an inclusive, united, and prosperous Kenyafree from ethnic divisions and founded on peaceful coexistencenoting that the simultaneous observance of Lent and Ramadan provides the nation a valuable moment for collective reflection and renewal.
