Kenya Unveils KSh 850M Stadium in Thika

The National Government, in partnership with Kiambu County Government, has officially commenced construction of a modern KSh 850 million, 10,000-seater stadium in Thika.
The significant project was revealed during a politically charged event, indicating evolving alliances and emerging rivalries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The unveiling ceremony was led by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.
They were joined by Thika Member of Parliament Alice Ng’ang’a and Kiambu deputy governor Rosemary Kirika.
The gathering revealed underlying political tensions, with two factions apparentone supporting Governor Wamatangi and another backing MP Ng’ang’a, who is widely preparing for a gubernatorial campaign in 2027.
During the launch, Defence CS Soipan Tuya characterized the advanced facility as a transformative initiative that will “transform Thika” by promoting sports development, generating employment, and boosting local enterprises.
She refuted assertions that street vendors near the stadium would be relocated, guaranteeing that their stalls would not be removed. She described the claims as misinformation intended to create unwarranted concern among vendors.
Sports CS Salim Mvurya stated that the Thika stadium initiative is part of the government’s extensive national program to establish and enhance sports infrastructure. He highlighted that the effort seeks to develop grassroots talent and establish Kenya as a regional sports leader.
Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a reaffirmed her dedication to protecting small-scale business owners, assuring that vendors would not lose their income due to the project.
She stressed that progress must occur while protecting the interests of ordinary citizens.
Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika indicated that the Kiambu County Government is fully prepared to collaborate with the national government to ensure the project delivers economic and social advantages to residents. She emphasized the significance of intergovernmental cooperation in delivering impactful development.
Upon completion, the 10,000-seat stadium is anticipated to substantially enhance Thika’s sports standing, providing contemporary amenities for athletics, football, and other activities while revitalizing the town’s economy.
