The Teachers Service Commission has promptly reacted to the fatal shooting of educator Stephen Vundi Musili in Garissa County, an incident attributed to Al-Shabaab extremists. In a Tuesday statement, the Commission declared that teacher security nationwide is now managed through collaborative efforts with major government bodies and security forces. Senior personnel have already been deployed to Garissa to consult with teachers, evaluate the circumstances on the ground, and offer adequate assistance to those impacted. The Commission denounced the killing in the strongest possible language, characterizing it as a despicable and dishonorable act that not only extinguished a young teacher’s life but also compromised the right to education, peace, and security for both instructors and students. At the same time, the Commission asked teachers throughout the country to maintain their composure, guaranteeing them that the situation is being addressed with urgency. Simultaneously, the Commission requested that local communities, religious organizations, and society as a whole support teachers who continue to work with bravery and devotion in all regions of the country. Kisii Press Club reported on Monday that Mr. Musili, who became affiliated with the Commission in January 2025, was assigned to Hulugho Primary School in Garissa. His remains were transported to Nairobi and kept at Chiromo Funeral Home. The occurrence has been characterized as a serious detriment to education and national security, reinforcing demands for enhanced protection of educators operating in unstable areas. On behalf of the teaching profession, the Commission expressed its most profound sympathies to Mr. Musili’s family, relatives, colleagues, and students, recognizing the deep sorrow caused by his passing. The tragedy has ignited a fresh national dedication to shield educators, with the government and the Commission vowing to ensure teachers can continue their professions without fear, protecting the future of Kenya’s youth.
