TSC deploys senior team to Garissa after teacher’s killing

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has sent a contingent of high-ranking officials to Garissa county to meet with educators and evaluate the circumstances following the demise of educator Stephen Vundi Musili.

In a declaration on Tuesday, the commission stated that the protection and safety of teachers is being managed within the framework of a collaborative effort involving key governmental institutions such as security agencies.

TSC chairman Jamleck Muturi indicated that this approach aims to protect educators and promote educational activities in all schools throughout Kenya.

TSC mentioned that the senior delegation had been dispatched to Garissa to collaborate closely with security forces and provide appropriate assistance to affected teachers.

“The commission has deployed a team of senior personnel to Garissa county to consult with the educators and evaluate the current situation. The team will provide the required support needed by the affected teachers,” Muturi said.

The commission appealed to partners, local communities, religious organizations and the general public to back educators working across the nation with dedication and commitment.

“We are requesting all stakeholders, local communities, religious organizations and the entirety of our society to support our teachers who are deployed throughout the country and continue to deliver their services with exceptional dedication, courage and commitment to enable our nation achieve the right to education for all the children of Kenya,” TSC stated.

The commission denounced the killing, calling it a vile and cowardly act that has not only taken the life of a young educator but also jeopardizes the right to education, peace, and security for both teachers and students.

Muturi emphasized that it takes the welfare and security of educators seriously and will provide all essential support to enhance the well-being of its staff.

The commission urged teachers to remain composed as the matter receives immediate attention from the collaborative security team.

“On behalf of the commission and the entire teaching community, we extend our most sincere condolences to the family of Mr Stephen Vundi Musili, his relatives, colleagues and students during this period of deep sorrow,” he added.

On Tuesday, TSC announced the death of an educator who was killed in an assault in Garissa county, characterizing the incident as a significant setback to education and security.

The Commission stated it received the news “with great sorrow” following the killing of Stephen Vundi Musili, an educator at Hulugho Primary School in Hulugho subcounty.

According to the Commission, the educator was “violently attacked and killed on January 26, 2026, by suspected al-Shabaab militants.”

The incident occurred in a region that has previously encountered security challenges. The commission noted that the educator had been working in a difficult setting and had demonstrated strong commitment to his profession.

TSC stated that the educator was employed on January 2, 2025. It described him as “a dedicated educator who had devoted himself to the honorable duty of educating students in a challenging environment with outstanding commitment, courage and dedication.”
