Nyeri County has unveiled the newly rehabilitated Ihururu Market, a move expected to benefit over 150 local traders and enhance commerce in the region. The launch, presided over by Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga on Monday, saw county officials and traders gather to witness the transformation of the market, which now features improved stalls, proper drainage systems, and better sanitation facilities. Governor Kahiga emphasized that the rehabilitation aligns with the county’s broader agenda of supporting small businesses and promoting inclusive economic growth.

The Ihururu Market had been in a state of disrepair for several years, with inadequate infrastructure affecting both vendors and customers. Poor drainage and collapsed stalls previously hampered business operations, leading to losses and limited trading days. The county’s rehabilitation project involved resurfacing walkways, installing waste disposal facilities, and upgrading water supply systems. Local artisans and small-scale traders expressed relief that their working environment has been modernized, allowing them to operate more efficiently and attract more customers.

Traders and residents welcomed the initiative, highlighting the positive impact on livelihoods and local commerce. Jane Wanjiru, a vegetable vendor, said, The new market structure is a blessing. I can now display my goods safely, and customers feel comfortable shopping here. County officials noted that the project is part of ongoing efforts to improve public market infrastructure across Nyeri, aiming to stimulate trade, reduce post-harvest losses, and create an enabling environment for micro and small enterprises. Looking ahead, further upgrades to surrounding roads and enhanced market management are expected to reinforce Nyeri’s position as a regional trade hub.
