Kisumu County govt begin process of replacing old houses

Kisumu County Government has initiated a major housing regeneration program to replace old and dilapidated residential units with modern, high-rise apartments.

Key Highlights:

Lead Official: Kisumu City Manager, Abala Wanga

Location: Milimani estate (latest project), with other estates including Lumumba, Makasembo, Anderson, Arina, Mosque, Shaurimoyo, Kibuye, and Muhoroni.

Partners: National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and UN Habitat

Project Details:

Milimani project: 162 modern apartments across 9 floors

Construction duration: 18 months, completion expected early 2027

Includes infrastructure upgrades: sewer and water systems, paved walkways, security features, and community utilities

Urban Renewal Scope:

By the end of Governor Anyang Nyong’o’s term, at least nine affordable and modern housing schemes will be completed

Innovative ownership models proposed in areas like Kaloleni and Obunga, allowing residents to co-own floors or units even without formal land titles

Goal: Provide dignified, inclusive, and modern housing to meet the aspirations of Kisumu’s growing urban population

This initiative is part of Kisumu County’s broader urban regeneration strategy to modernize housing, improve living conditions, and plan for future urban growth.
