Taita Taveta County has received a Sh70 million boost from WaterFund to enhance access to clean and reliable water for residents. The funding will facilitate the construction of a 500-cubic-meter water storage tank at Kasarani, among other infrastructure improvements. The project, scheduled for completion by the end of August 2024, is expected to serve households in Kaloleni, Voi Sub-county, and surrounding areas, addressing long-standing water shortages exacerbated by prolonged droughts. Governor Andrew Mwadime emphasized that the initiative reflects the county’s commitment to partnering with governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve essential services, including water, health, agriculture, and education.

The county government is supplementing the WaterFund support with an additional Sh15 million to expand water supply coverage, particularly in underserved rural areas experiencing population growth. Tavevo Water and Sewerage Company will oversee the extension of distribution lines to several localities, including Kaloleni, Mnaoni, Kalambe, Kavingoni, Mlegwa, Mkamenyi, Manoni, Gimba, and Wongoni. County Chief Officer for Water, Reuben Kitololo, noted that the improved infrastructure aims to ensure equitable access to water and strengthen community resilience against climate-related challenges.

WaterFund CEO Willis Ombai described the initiative as a climate-proofed investment that will enhance the county’s ability to withstand droughts and safeguard livelihoods. Officials from the county hailed the project as a milestone for sustainable development, promising that residents will benefit from a more dependable water supply. Looking ahead, the project is expected to support broader socioeconomic growth in Taita Taveta by enabling improved household health, agricultural productivity, and overall quality of life.
