Kenya’s sugar factories paid farmers 92% of the cane delivered in 2023—the highest in a decade—thanks to government bailouts and operational reforms. The Sugar Directorate reported Ksh28 billion paid to 200,000 farmers, up from 68% in 2022. Revived mills like Mumias and West Kenya paid within 30 days, boosting grower confidence. The sector produced 720,000 tonnes of sugar, cutting imports to 22%. A new Ksh2 billion revolving fund ensures timely input supply. However, aging machinery and low yields remain challenges. The government aims for 100% payment compliance and self-sufficiency by 2026 under the Sugar Recovery Plan.
