Former Murang’a Governor Wa Iria Sets Sights on 2027 Presidency
Former Murang’a governor Mwangi wa Iria has declared his intention to run for the presidency in Kenya’s 2027 general elections, signaling a renewed push for national leadership through his Usawa Kwa Wote party. Speaking at a press briefing in Kabati, Murang’a County, Wa Iria vowed to avoid the pitfalls that led to his disqualification in last year’s election, citing insufficient signatures as the reason he was barred from contesting. They claimed that I did not raise 20,000 signatures. In 2027, I will give them 15 million signatures. I will take them there with lorries, he declared, underscoring his determination to secure a place on the ballot.
Wa Iria emphasised that his bid does not stem from opposition to the Kenya Kwanza government, but from a desire to ensure his community is politically represented and heard. While he previously lent support to the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance after his failed presidential attempt, Wa Iria clarified that he has always been committed to the Usawa party. He also called for calm between the Mt. Kenya and Western regions, addressing rising tensions over a dispute between Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. If anybody from my community has said anything that has irked the western community, on their behalf, I apologize, he said, urging unity ahead of the next election cycle.
Political analysts suggest Wa Iria’s early announcement is a strategic move to build momentum and consolidate support across key regions. By starting preparations well in advance, he aims to avoid bureaucratic hurdles and expand his base beyond Murang’a, targeting both grassroots mobilisation and national recognition. As Kenya approaches 2027, Wa Iria joins a growing list of aspirants positioning themselves as alternatives to established political formations, highlighting the increasingly competitive nature of the country’s presidential race and the evolving dynamics within Kenya’s multiparty democracy.
